Quantative Prognosis of Oil and Natural Gas fields based on remotely sensing data with the use of GIS technologies.

Use of proposed techniques reduce volume of financial investments and allow to determine
perspective oil and gas bearing structures on early stage of prospection. The results
of our works are confirmed by the vertical seismic profiling and drillings.

We developed a technique for creating quantitative maps to prognosticate oil
and natural gas deposits. The scale of works is from 1:200 000 to 1:10 000. At all stages
of works we use ERDAS Imagine, GIS-technologies and author's software.

Estimation of the territory’s prospective is based on the use of relationship between oil/gas
deposits and explosive structures in different scale levels. It is evident that the spectral
brightness of vegetative cover depends on the presence of oil and natural gas deposits.
The forecast of deposits is carried out on the basis of the complex attributes.

Various methods are used to estimate prospective areas based on the image recognition principles. The result of implemented works is quantitative estimation of probability determination of objects in each point of research area. The research point responds to the minimal area, which is identified in satellite digital imagery (5х5 m, 15х15m, 30х30m etc.).

In the case of significant differences in depths of deposits and location of oil and gas, the
prognosis maps are created separately for the main productive horizons.

Methodical Approach:

The following methods are used to prognosticate oil/gas fields:

  • Structural recognition based on remotely sensed data and topographical cards, which
    allows to allocate structures of sediment cover;
  • Digitalization of results of the structural recognition;
  • Remote phytoindication which defines the influence of flying hydrocarbons
    on vegetation;
  • Prognosis of hydrocarbon saturation of territory:
  1. Spatial stochastic feasibility of forecasting
  2. Image recognition;
  • Analysis of geological structures.
